One of the best ways to grow your channel organically is ranking your videos higher on YouTube search results. And the best way to rank your videos is finding the right keywords for your video topic and metadata.
Wikipedia defines keyword research as
“Keyword research is a practice search engine optimization (SEO) professionals use to find and research alternative search terms that people enter into search engines while looking for a similar subject.”Wikipedia
In a simple way Keyword research is the act of finding the search terms along with some analytics that people search on search engines.
Keyword research for YouTube not only helps to find the video topics that may interest your audience but also find the right terms that you can rank higher in SERPs and grow your YouTube channel.
YouTube is the second largest search engine after Google. If you want to rank your videos higher, you must optimise your videos and metadata for search engines. Keyword research is an essential part of any SEO including SEO for your YouTube videos. So in this article, I’ll show how you can find the best keywords and optimise your keywords for higher rank in YouTube search results.
So let’s get started.
Pick a topic
Before using a keyword tool and finding the keywords with search stats, you have to come up with a topic for your next video.
I have published an article on how to get video ideas for YouTube here on Dreamandu.
Make sure that the video topic is on your niche.
The video topic helps to find a seed keyword for keyword research. Seed keyword is the main topic or theme of the video idea.
For an example if your next video idea is about “best video camera”, “video camera” is the seed keyword for keyword research.
After deciding the seed keyword, the next step is to find the keywords that are actually being searched on YouTube. We can use different Keyword research tools to discover the right keywords like Keywordtools, Tubebuddy etc.
I’ve an article on the best keyword research tools for YouTube. Make sure to find the best tool for you.
In this article I’ll use two methods to find the keywords for your videos.
1. Using keyword research tools
In this method we’ll use keyword research tools like TubeBuddy to find the best keywords for your video.
I’ll use two keyword tools for YouTube to find the right keywords and also show how to optimise them for higher ranks.
The first tool we will use is Keywordtool.io .
First head over to keywordtool for YouTube. Then enter the seed keyword for research. In our case it’s “video camera” . You can also choose the language. I’ll choose Global/English for this one. Then click on the Search icon.
Then it’ll load a list of keywords related to the seed keyword. The stats like Search Volume, CPC, Trend and Competition will be hidden in the free version. The pro version costs around 70$/month. But you don’t have to worry about it. We will just use the free version’s feature.
From the list you can actually find the long tail versions of the seed keyword.
It is actually tougher to rank for short keywords like “video camera” than it is to rank for longer variations like “video camera buying guide” and “video camera for streaming”. So you can actually optimise your content as per the related keywords.
Instead of creating video for a wide topic “video camera” you can create video on “best video camera for streaming” which is easier to rank for as there is less competition.
You can select the keywords you want to target and copy them to your clipboard.
Now we will use our other tool to find the keywords with stats and verify the claims that long tail keywords have less competition than short keywords.
It provides a powerful chrome extension that can integrate with your channel page and help you manage your channel in a better way. To get started with TubeBuddy, head over to TubeBuddy’s website and click on Install free now and add it to your browser. The tubebuddy extension is available for Chrome, Firefox, edge and other popular browsers.
The service is available for free and you can always upgrade to premium versions to access more features. The Pro plan costs just 9$/month. You get 20% off on annual subscription and 50% off if your channel has less than 1000 subscribers. So I would recommend upgrading to the Pro plan.
After installing the extension, make sure you switch to the channel you want to manage with TubeBuddy. Then you’ll see a tubebuddy icon just left to the upload button on YouTube. You’ll have to login before you can use it to manage your channel. Click on the TubeBuddy sign in required link. Then click on Sign in with YouTube.
Enter the details and sign in to the TubeBuddy. It will ask for permissions to access your channel. Allow the permissions and you’ll be asked to select the channel you want to manage with TubeBuddy. Select the one you switched to in the previous step.
Then it will show the TubeBuddy icon just left to the upload icon. It contains all the tools that can help you manage your YouTube channel. Here we’ll just use the keyword explorer tool.
Click on the tubebuddy icon and select Tool from the top section. Then click on Launch Keyword Explorer now. It’ll load the keyword explorer tool.
Enter your keyword and click on explore option. We will use the keyword ‘video camera’ in this tool as well.
It’ll show how competitive it is to use for videos. As per the tool, the search volume is excellent and the keyword is competitive to rank. It also shows us the related keywords. Let’s select the first related keyword “video camera for youtube”.
It shows that the search volume and competition is relatively lesser than the seed keyword.
You can perform the searches for other related keywords and explore more long tail keywords. You can optimize your content as per the related keywords.
So instead of creating a video on ‘video camera’ topic, you can opt for “best video camera for youtube” which obviously has less search volume but is easier to rank for.
2. Spying on top videos
Another way of finding the right keywords for your videos is having a look at tags which are already ranking higher on YouTube searches.
Make a search through YouTube search feature and evaluate the tags used on top 2 to 3 videos with Tubebuddy. This can give you an idea on what keywords to target on your video.
You can run the search on keyword tools to check which keyword to include on your video from the top videos.

Copy Keywords to Clipboard
Besides optimizing your content as per the long tail keywords, you have to copy the keywords and paste it to your note keeping app or google docs. We’ll use these keywords to optimize our title, description and tags.
Optimize your Video Title, Description and tags
Finding the best keywords with more search volume and less competitions would not just help you rank your videos. You would have to optimize your title, descriptions and tags to rank your videos.
You must optimize your title properly to rank higher for a search term. Make sure that you include your keyword properly without keyword stuffing.
For the seed keyword “video camera” I have chosen three long tail keywords.
- video camera for YouTube
- Video camera for beginners
- Video camera 2020
Although there will be many variations of the keyword, you can use a single title that is search friendly and also compelling to the viewers.
So you can choose a title like “Best Video Camera for YouTube Beginners “.
You can use brackets and colons to include many variations and make them compelling to viewers.
Video description is another important spot to use many variations of keywords in your video.
Make sure to not use just the tags on your descriptions as it is against the terms of service. So put proper paragraphs and a list of queries in the description.
If you are creating listicle type videos you can include, short description of every item on the list.
You can add more keywords on the description as it supports 5000 characters. So you can add different variations of the keyword on the description. But make sure not to keyword stuff.
Tags are another important element that can help to rank your videos higher on search results.
This is the spot where you can add different variations of the keyword of your video. You can use both short tail and long tail keywords relevant to the video topic.
You can use the keywords as per the research. Tags with low competition and higher search volume are preferred.
Apart from title, tags and description, closed captions or subtitles can improve your ranking on SERPs.
Make sure to say the keywords on your video and include a proper subtitle to your videos.
Creating Great Quality Content
You can rank higher on YouTube searches from the steps mentioned above. But to maintain the rank is another important step. You need to have better engagement and audience retention to keep ranking higher.
To keep ranking higher, you must create the best quality content. You can use better equipment and tools for this.
